Yes, he writes awesome synth music. So he can play stunning improvisations on the piano, too! The way he improvises is a bit like Frank Zappa played his guitar solos live: It sounds very structured, pretty much like a composition. Obviously, he's got a clear vision in his head beforehand, which he can spool out directly to his fingers. Favorite track: Strength.

This is a collection of improvised piano pieces built thematically around 11 selected Major Arcana of the Tarot.

My process involved playing to a feeling until I thought the focus was lost. I would then stop, edit, and continue playing until the idea ran it's course, after which I would continue to edit until the piece felt complete.

I'm always somewhat reluctant to listen to epics longer than 10 minutes. Why? Well... lots of them are just... er... long! Song ideas for 5 minutes, inflated to 15, 20, 30, ore more minutes. Yes, each prog band must have at least one 20-minute concerto on an album, right? Yawn... usually I wish they'd have left off the epics... But not so in this case. Fortunately - because this album consists of just one single epic - and it's a great one! This is how this old musical form inherited from 70's art rock was meant to be: A great piece of music to be remembered. This one surely will be... Sven B. Schreiber (sbs)
